Longevity benefits of cocoa
Cocoa has antioxidant properties, it supports a healthy inflammatory response, and it increases the bioavailability of nitric oxide, a molecule that dilates blood vessels and promotes healthy blood flow.*
Cocoa beans are also one of the most potent sources of flavonoids, a type of polyphenol, or plant compound with a long list of health benefits.
Cocoa and chocolate intake promote:
- healthy blood sugar
- healthy blood pressure
- healthy cholesterol
- vascular function
- cognitive performance
- heart health
- healthy longevity*
Why quality cocoa is crucial
Chocolate is made from cocoa… but not every bar is healthy.
The chocolate manufacturing process reduces flavonoid levels. In particular, dutching (an alkalinization treatment) reduces flavonoid content by 60%.
Plus, chocolate can contain high levels of sugar. Not so good for you.
Chocolate and cocoa also contain heavy metals, like lead, cadmium, and arsenic. You can't avoid them completely… but it's important to know what you're consuming and go for options with lower levels when possible.
What to look for
When choosing cocoa, look for:
- 100% pure cocoa
- undutched
- third-party tested for heavy metals
- significant flavonoid content
Cocoa has been one of the toughest products for our supply chain. Most cocoa powder available today doesn't fit our standards. We tested 10+ cocoa suppliers to find the cleanest one with the highest flavanols (a subset of flavonoids).
- 8% flavanols (>400mg per serving)
- fully undutched with no added ingredients or sweeteners
- third-party tested for purity and heavy metals
It's all the good without the bad.

How to consume cocoa
You can use cocoa powder to make hot chocolate, mix it into coffee or smoothies, or add it to baking recipes. Bryan sometimes adds Blueprint Cocoa Powder to Nutty Pudding or a protein shake for a flavonoid boost.
Tip: Cocoa has naturally-occurring caffeine so consume it in the morning or early afternoon.
